Three everyday examples for this design.

At breakfast, draw a small portion of softened butter toward the stop instead of chasing the block across the tray.
Set out butter for a bread basket so each guest can take a portion from the same stable end.
When making several sandwiches, portion the butter against the raised edge and replace the cover when finished.

Keep the butter where your knife expects it. One low stop leaves a clear path for the knife without a removable mechanism. The proposed design is being developed around everyday use and accessible cleaning.
